The Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid: A cultural emblem of the city

A major multidisciplinary centre with one of the most active cultural programmes in Madrid, the Círculo de Bellas Artes of Madrid has played a major role in the field of cultural creation and diffusion ever since its foundation in 1880. Its most iconic building holds several exhibition rooms, a cinema, a theatre, concert halls, lecture halls, artists’ workshops, a library, a cafeteria and a shop.

The Círculo de Bellas Artes is a meeting point for thought, the sciences, literature, philosophy and the arts. The conferences, talks, discussions and poetry recitals that are organised on a daily basis have involved leading figures from the world of culture such as Günter Grass, Seamus Heaney, Jürgen Habermass, Rafael Alberti, George Steiner, Slavoj Žižek, Claudio Magris, Antonio Gamoneda, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Cees Nooteboom, Manoel de Oliveira, Jean Baudrillard, Umberto Eco, Juan Gelman, John Berger, Ernesto Sábato, Álvaro Siza, Carlos Fuentes and Edward Said, among several other. The building which houses the Círculo de Bellas Artes was designed by the architect Antonio Palacios and built in 1926.

While you are in Madrid

These interesting exhibitions will be on at the Círculo de Bellas Artes while you are in Madrid for the Conference. It will not be easy to decide which to visit…so you may save some time to see both and get acquainted with one of the most active and busy intellectual hubs of Madrid.

  • “Trans-Time”, an exhibition of works by the prestigious Spanish photographer Cristina García Rodero during her frequent trips around Galicia and spanning three decades of work.
  • The Madrid Upper School of Communication, Image and Sound (CEV) will present the work of some of its students in the terraced roof of the Círculo de Bellas Artes. This photography exhibition of new emerging artists combines vocational with academic traits, and it’s both playful and creative.
