Female athletes possess a series of physiological and hormonal characteristics that should be studied in more depth and be taken into account at the level of professional competition. This conclusion was set out at the recent “Female sport and health” Seminar, an initiative organized by the Real Madrid International School - Universidad Europea de Madrid and the first to specialize in sport and its relation to other disciplines such as health, management, leisure or communication. “Both top level athletes and their trainers should pay more attention to the specific characteristics of female health as in some cases sporting activity can be beneficial however for others a different training program is needed that is more suited to the physiological and hormonal circumstances of each woman”, declared Dr. Maita Poli de Araujo during the seminar, professor of Medicine at the Universidad Anhembi Morumbi in Brazil and member of the Gynaecology Division for Sport at the Universidad Federal de Sao Paulo. By way of example, this expert explained that “up to 10% of professional top competition female athletes have a lower level of performance during their menstrual cycles” in addition to highlighting that until now these factors have been little studied in Medicine and, as such, have had very little application in professional sport. In her presentation at the seminar organized by the Real Madrid International School -Universidad Europea de Madrid, Dr. Poli de Araujo also insisted on the need for specific Physical Therapy training for elite females athletes – a fact borne out by recent studies according to which, for example, urinary incontinence, a disorder whose treatment plays an important part in rehabilitation treatment, affects 10% of the population, “and this figure increases to 70% in the case of professional gymnasts”.
